First Attempt of Hand-Dyeing April 25, 2010

I attempted hand-dyeing my first skein of wool this morning. Right now it’s drip-drying on the faucet in my sink.

The colors I choose were Lemon-Lime and Orange Kool-Aid

It didn’t turn out too bad. I had a bit of a scare when the liquid combined in the bottom of my dish and made a lovely brown. But after taking the skein out of the dish, the skein dyed wonderfully. The yarn took up all the orange color, there was some green left in the dish, but the green part of the yarn was colored fine for me, so I stopped nuking it.

The yarn has sections of green, orange and some light brown specks. The brown actuallly looks good good with the other colors. I was afraid the top part of the skein would be the colors I wanted and the underside would be the brown color. But it dyed like I wanted.

The yarn is still a bit water logged, you can see the colors. The base yarn is Patons Classic Wool in Winter White. As for my method of dyeing, it was a combination of instructions from Knit Picks,, and Leisure Arts (this last link is to a PDF file). Plus a little help from the book Teach Yourself VISUALLY Hand-Dyeing.

Pictures of the finished, dried product will come a little later. Now I’m off to find a pattern that takes only one skein of yarn. 🙂

I came home from the gym yesterday to find one of those re-usable shopping bags from a local grocery store hanging on my door. Inside was a bouquet of purple carnations. They’ve had these things at our local Giant Food Stores for a while now. I just could never justify spending $9.99 for them. My mom bought them for me when she was grocery shopping yesterday. Here’s a picture of them:

Aren’t they the neatest shades of purple?

One of the first crochet books I bought touched my favorite type of movie-horror. The book was Creepy Cute Crochet: Zombies, Ninjas, Robots, and More! by Christen Haden. She has a handful of free “expansion pack” creatures on her website.

To my utter delight, she’s got two Silent Hill characters, Robbie the Rabbit and most recently, Pyramid Head. PH is my favorite baddy in both the game and the movie. Once I saw the website entry, I knew I had to crochet him. Robbie needs some company on his shelf. It took me all but a day to get PH crocheted up. This guy took a little more in the assembly department, but it took less than 15 minutes to get the plastic canvas cut and stitched together for his head structure.

So without further ado, here is Pyramid Head:

Here are some smaller pics

The left pic is PH from the front, the right is PH before his head was attached.

**Disclaimer, Silent Hill is a survival horror game, some people might not like the gory nature of the picture of the real PH. If you get offended by violence, blood, gore, horror, etc please do not click the link. He’s just a fictional character, but I know some people get offended by stuff like this.

For anybody who has never seen the real Pyramid Head, here’s a link

Why do you tempt me so?

Last night I got their new catalog in the mail. The last thing I need is more yarn. But they’ve got so much nice stuff. I keep looking at the yarn thinking that I can make this project or that project with that type of yarn. I look at the lovely colors of lace and think, “I can find a nice lace weight pattern to use that for.” So far I’ve restrained myself. I just ordered last week and got my yarn last Thursday. I”ll wait for a bit to order. That Wool of the Andes Bulky is wonderful, it’s nice and soft. I really want the Galaxy colorway, but I’ve got a lot of purple stuff. But how can you resist your favorite color?

I’ve already used the Spumoni colorway for my MacBook Bag……

The Spumoni is the multi-colored yarn. Which you probably guessed that by now. The pattern was improvised by me. I used continuous rounds. I was debating felting it, but I decided not to. It’s a bit big, but I couldn’t let it felt too much. It gives me an option if it stretches out. I do have to come up with something to take some of the pull off the strap. I can’t use the strap when the computer is in the bag, it really pulls.

I’ll have to think about it.

Even though I have a handful of crochet projects started, I felt like doing something quick and more or less mindless. While browsing my  queue on Ravelry . I saw this quick little scrubby by Judith Prindle. It took a very short amount of time to do. It was an easy way to keep my mind on something but not have to really concentrate.

Mine is made with Lily Sugar ‘n Cream cotton yarn.

Just a test

I’m just testing my new blog to see how the formatting is with a post.

Just a random Animal Crossing picture. That’s my character with the pink hair and a fellow villager, Nate. We are wearing the Packers design that I made.
